DENVER – Professor Andrew Nicholson will be recognized by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) with the Mary J. Matthews Pathology/Translational Research award at the IASLC 2019 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in Barcelona, Spain. Nicholson, a professor in respiratory pathology, will be honored for his lifetime scientific achievements in pathology-translational research of thoracic malignancies.
Dr. Nicholson trained in medicine at Oxford University and St. Bartholomew’s Medical School, and then specialized in thoracic pathology at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He is an honorary professor in respiratory pathology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College in London.
Dr. Nicholson’s research has been referred to in over 300 cases each year, mainly cancer related, from clinicians and other pathologists both nationally and internationally. His research interests are common and rare lung cancers, mesotheliomas, thymic tumors and other thoracic diseases such as interstitial lung disease.
Dr. Nicholson is the past chair of the IASLC Pathology Panel and a long-standing member of the IASLC Staging and Prognostic Factors Committee and the IASLC Membership Committee. He was on the Specialist Advisory Panel for the Royal College of Pathologists for the past decade and is president-elect of the British Division of the International Academy of Pathologists.
Dr. Nicholson co-authored the medical text Pathology of the Lung, second and third editions, with Byran Corrin. He was a volume editor of the 2015 World Health Organization Classification of Lung, Pleura, Thymus and Heart Tumors. He is also the author of the AFIP Atlas of Tumor Pathology: Tumors of the Lower Respiratory Tract.
Professor Nicholson will be honored on Sept. 7, 2019 at the Opening Ceremony of the IASLC 2019 WCLC in Barcelona, Spain.
