Committee projects

WCLC Press Program

The Committee evaluated the Abstracts, and top-rated ones were chosen for press briefings. Researchers presented findings using abbreviated slides, with materials shared via a website link. Moderators and advocates are selected, and scripts are drafted for each briefing. In 2024 there were 19 Scientific Releases to the global media. 14 multilanguage podcasts were recorded and distributed onsite, and ILCN/WCLC News released 2 issues/day throughout.

WCLC Social Media & Communications Workshop

The WCLC SoMe & Communications Workshop is an interactive session focused on enhancing communication skills for IASLC members. The 2024 workshop improved understanding of the IASLC brand while providing valuable educational benefits. Topics included essentials for early career investigators, mastering confident presentations, crafting compelling abstracts, and engaging with media. Additionally, discussions covered amplifying diverse voices in lung cancer conversations and the role of patient advocacy. The event concluded with a networking session and free headshots for attendees.

IASLC Meeting Ambassadors

The Committee has appointed liaisons for IASLC-sponsored conferences to act as ambassadors for disseminating conference knowledge. Key deliverables include creating pre-conference promotional materials, providing live social media coverage during the events, and producing post-conference summaries to share important findings with members and stakeholders.

50-Year JTO Retrospective

50 Years of Advances in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Bringing Context to Clinical Care in Thoracic Oncology

This special article will commemorate five decades of progress in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), presenting a comprehensive review of major advancements from diagnosis to treatment. Aimed at providing an invaluable resource for fellows and trainees, this article will serve as a "go-to" text to inform current standards of care in thoracic oncology. The project is led by the IASLC Communications Committee, with the goal of publishing it in the January 2025 edition of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology (JTO), marking the conclusion of the IASLC's 50th anniversary.

Each section will highlight key milestones in areas such as staging, pulmonary medicine, surgery, pathology, molecular testing, screening, radiation oncology, and therapeutics.

The article will include a detailed timeline illustration and a critical table summarizing the most paradigm-shifting clinical trials in NSCLC over the past 50 years. This seminal piece will stand as a cornerstone reference, documenting how clinical care in thoracic oncology has evolved and setting the stage for future breakthroughs.

Communication Expansion in China and Establish & Expand KOL Strategy

The Communications Committee is working to establish partnerships with institutions and organizations in China to adapt content for Chinese audiences. Initiatives include forming multidisciplinary discussion teams, organizing academic meetings online and offline, promoting international cooperation on research projects, and implementing trainee exchange programs. A key component is the Key Opinion Leader (KOL) Strategy, where KOLs collaborate with IASLC and CC to disseminate content through popular channels like WeChat and Weibo in the form of videos and articles. Additionally, translating content into Mandarin and layman's terms aims to enhance accessibility for a broader audience."
